Laquisha first became part of our YMCA family before the pandemic, visiting the Taylor Bend Family YMCA regularly with her children. Her husband, Marcus, is a Newport News firefighter, and Laquisha was often found at the Y on Saturdays, enjoying all that the Y has to offer.

Her journey took an exciting turn in 2021, when she earned her degree as a nurse practitioner. Shortly after, she approached the executive director, Kelly, with an interest in becoming a Zumba instructor, bringing her passion for fitness and wellness to her community. In June 2022, Laquisha achieved her certification, joining the YMCA of South Hampton Roads as a part-time instructor. Her Zumba classes have since become a highlight at the Taylor Bend Y, where her energy inspires and motivates members of all ages.

Laquisha’s service doesn’t stop there. Just today, she returned to Taylor Bend not just as a teacher but as a healthcare provider, offering flu shots to voters and YMCA staff—a true reflection of her spirit of giving.

A healthcare worker, a wife to a first responder, a mother to two incredible kids—Menkaura, 10, and Menkheperra, 7—Laquisha is a servant leader, balancing her many roles with grace and making an impact wherever she goes. We couldn’t be prouder to celebrate Laquisha’s accomplishments and her commitment to health, wellness, and her community.

Laquisha, thank you for all that you bring to the YMCA family and beyond. We’re so grateful for your dedication and example, reminding us that community starts with people like you.

At the YMCA, we're fortunate to witness firsthand the power of service and community through the stories of our members. If you have a story to tell, please share it here
