Stretch, Yoga & Pilates

Living healthy is about spirit, mind and body at every age and stage. The YMCA of South Hampton Roads offers a variety of mind/body classes to help you relax, strengthen, stretch and improve flexibility.



Strengthen and lengthen the core muscles. Breathing control and flexibility exercises are used to improve posture, body alignment and overall strength. Variations include Starter Pilates, Pilates Plus that incorporates tai chi, kickboxing and strength training, and Pilates-Belly Fusion that combines Pilates, Yoga and abdominal/leg exercises to strengthen your midsection and base (and little bit of belly dancing to bring it all together!). SEE THE SCHEDULE.


Concentrate on improving balance, flexibility, relaxation and breathing techniques. This is a great way to learn how to manage and relieve stress. Variations include Gentle Yoga, Power Yoga and Prenatal Yoga. SEE THE SCHEDULE.

Chair Exercise

This class is designed for the active older adult and is primarily performed in a chair, although some standing exercises may be incorporated. Tubing and other equipment may be used to improve strength, flexibility and balance.

Stretch & Tone

Stretch and tone classes allow you to exercise and stretch your entire body. Free weights, resistance bands and fit balls are utilized to maximize your workout. Looking to just stretch? Improve your flexibility and muscle tone with a concentration on body awareness, breathing techniques and increased range of motion in one of strictly stretch classes. 

Stretch, Move & Bend

This class is designed especially for our active older adults and others who want to focus on increasing cardiovascular fitness, strength, balance and flexibility. Activity includes low-impact movement performed at a lower intensity, along with muscle conditioning exercises for flexibility and balance. SEE THE SCHEDULE.

Arthritis Class

An arthritis foundation exercise program designed for those with arthritis and related diseases. Includes health education, exercises, movement activities and relaxation. Exercises include: range of motion, strengthening, and endurance, designed to keep the joints moving, the muscles around the joints strong and the bones healthy.

Balance & Flex Together®

Balance & Flex Together® will grow you longer and stronger with an invigorating 60-minute mind-body workout. It incorporates yoga and Pilates fundamentals with athletic training for balance, mobility, flexibility and the core. Emotive music drives the experience as you breathe and sweat through this full-body fitness journey.

Barre Exercise

This total body workout is a fusion of ballet barre exercises, Pilates core work, yoga flexibility and resistance training that will sculpt, stretch and tone major muscle groups. Class may include balls, bands or dumbbells. No dance experience needed. SEE THE SCHEDULE.


A fusion of Pilates and Yoga blending one move into another - the core work of Pilates with the balance and strength of Yoga.


Combines the muscle-sculpting, core-firming benefits of Pilates with the strength and flexibility advantages of yoga led by a certified PiYO instructor.

Yin-inspired Yoga

Yin Yoga is designed to compliment a regular yoga practice with longer held poses, (2-3 minutes). The practice targets the connective tissue, such as ligaments, bones and joints that normally are not exercised much in a more active style of yoga. Class incorporates slow flow/standing postures with Yin postures, including final relaxation. Appropriate for all levels.

Restorative Yoga

A class focusing on three to five postures using a series of props and holding the poses anywhere from six to twelve minutes. Restorative Yoga is designed to calm the nervous system and create overall health in the body.

Chair Yoga

This yoga class is performed in a chair for those who cannot get up and down from the floor. Enjoy the benefits of yoga breathing, stretching and relaxation while using a chair for support. Good for beginners or those with physical limitations.
