Partnering For A Better Us
In 2016, together with members, donors, community organizations, volunteers, and staff the Y delivered the promise for a better us to over 250,000 people.
With the help of these partners and through initiatives that continued to focus on healthy living, youth development, and social responsibility, we found innovative ways to transform lives and strengthen our community
Fun and fitness met as the Y partnered with MacArthur Center to bring group exercise to participants of the Traveling Y – This free summer-long event engaged the community in the mission of the Y outside of our four walls. The Traveling Y continues its emphasis on healthy living with 26 scheduled events in 2017.
Our therapy partners at Sentara continued to help the Y change lives by empowering those that suffer from chronic diseases and post-injury patients to rediscover their strength and independence. Nearly 500 hours of jabs and uppercuts were spent fighting the debilitating effects of Parkinson’s disease in the Rock Steady Boxing Program.
TIDE swimming and the Y continued to build strong youth in swimming and in life, and with the expansion of the team into our Great Bridge/Hickory and Greenbrier Family pools, added 80 swimmers to their roster.
LIVESTRONG at the Y held its first class at the Hilltop Family YMCA where cancer survivors discovered strength in themselves and support from each other. This free program for survivors expanded into Norfolk in January and will continue impacting those living with and beyond cancer.
Last summer, over 20,000 camper weeks brought the thrill of discovery and friendship to campers across the area. For campers at Camp Silver Beach fun meant climbing to the height of 8 Mt. Everests by way of the Alpine Tower and Zip lining the distance to New York.
With the help of 36 community organizations and nearly 700 volunteers, The Y’s Togetherhood program continued to bring people together through community service projects like feeding families during the holidays and preparing teens for life after high school.
Transformational partnerships drive positive change.
Thank you for being a part of the community that continues to work together to foster a better us…
