Y-USA Elects Anthony Walters to Board of Directors
The Y's National Board, representing Y-USA, announced this week its new officers and board members for 2022-2024. Included within the elected members is Anthony Walters, President & CEO for the YMCA of South Hampton Roads.
Walters began his tenure as the YMCA of South Hampton Roads President & CEO in December of 2019, bringing a nearly 20-year Y career to his new appointment, previously serving in multiple roles from Charlotte to South Hampton Roads, including Chief Strategy Officer before his transition to President & CEO. Since his most recent appointment, Anthony has: worked with volunteers, partners and staff navigating the Y's critical role to community throughout the COVID-19 pandemic and the precarious financial circumstances brought on by the pandemic; developed and implemented a new three-year strategic plan; added the Vice President of Equity and Belonging position, a leadership role solely dedicated to ensuring that diversity, equity and belonging is considered in all aspects of the Y's work; and has withstood unprecedented pressures that birthed great opportunity to reengage and alter the way the Y serves community, including 24-hour access, the Virtual Y and new childcare offerings.
YUSA's strategic planning through their board of managers will help guide resource allocation to local Ys, and for the first time in history, the YMCA of South Hampton Roads will have a seat at the table to represent our diverse local community. Mr. Walters' appointment to Y-USA's National Board puts him the company of inner-Y network professionals, and also amongst those that hold positions and disciplines outside of the Y. Those individuals include newly elected Board Chair and external professional CiCi Rojas, the first Hispanic Board Chair in Y-USA history and an accomplishment C-Suite Executive turned entrepreneur. Other members of the board bring their personal and professional experience in banking, data analytics, education, healthcare, equity, and more. Additionally, Walters will work alongside Suzanne McCormick, newly appointed CEO of Y-USA and first woman to lead YMCA of the USA national office.
Anthony shared that,"I am grateful and humbled by the opportunity to be a voice for the movement on behalf of local YMCAs throughout the United States. Engaging with leaders, and listening to leaders from across the country will be important ingredients as we reimagine and reposition our YMCA for our present and future. I'm thrilled about our forthcoming conversations, and excited for the perspective it could provide for the YMCA of South Hampton Roads".
