YMCA at Town Center Location to Close December 31, 2020 Due to Health Crisis

SOUTH HAMPTON ROADS – As the health crisis continues, many organizations have shifted operations responding to the current reality of the market. The Y is no exception. In 2020, shortfalls in membership and programs compressed expected revenues by 40%. With a recovery likely to be a slow climb, it became necessary to make difficult decisions to preserve the Y’s most critical services. 

The YMCA at Town Center’s boutique operation served the heart of Virginia Beach’s residential and business community for the last two years. Opening this center in 2018 was a new venture for the YMCA of South Hampton Roads – providing primarily personal and group training. 

“As we continue to evaluate our operational model to serve the community in the current landscape, we are refocusing our efforts on core YMCA deliverables. The YMCA at Town Center was an exciting addition to the YMCA family two years ago. Unfortunately, our Y is no longer in a position to direct resources to this venture. The Y will do the best we can to utilize remaining resources to serve the community,” said Anthony Walters, President and CEO of the YMCA of South Hampton Roads. 

The Y anticipates more challenges and changes on the horizon in the near future. “It’ll take our entire team to position the Y for success in 2021. We’ve dedicated ourselves to expense control in every area and will continue to seek philanthropic partners to help preserve and sustain operations” said Walters.
