As we look back on 2018 and celebrate the accomplishments of the YMCA of South Hampton Roads, we were blessed to add the YMCA at Town Center in January, the YMCA of South Boston and Halifax County in March, and the YMCA of Portsmouth and YMCA JT’s Camp Grom in June. We are excited to welcome these new members to our YMCA family! Our new program centers allowed us to reach the most participants in our history, serving 256,056 people.

In 2018, our Y continued to deliver on our promise to strengthen the foundations of all of the communities we serve. We accomplish this goal three ways:

1. Nourish the growth and development of every child and teen we serve

2. Improve our communities’ health and well-being

3. Give our friends and neighbors opportunities to give back to the communities they love through volunteerism and annual giving

Nurture Potential

With our 2020 Strategic Plan as our guide, we continued our work in 2018, building confident kids and future leaders through programs like camp, swim lessons, after-school programs and programs that help prevent summer learning loss.

Improve Health

It takes a village. With the help of community partners and dedicated stewards of the Y's mission, 2018 was a year of monumental impact in the areas of healthy living—with three new locations, fresh equipment and continued work in improving the health of our community, we are moving the mark.

Give Back

Giving back and providing support to our neighbors was a common theme in 2018, across all communities that the Y serves. With friends of the Y lending their hearts and resources, we all helped to continue the legacy of the past 160 years of the Y listening and responding to the needs of our neighbors. We all came together as Y champions!
