The Y is the most accessible community resource to prevent drowning and encourage a lifelong enjoyment of swimming.

This summer, swim lessons at the Y will look a little differentin response to the physical distancing guidelines required by COVID-19, we’ve redesigned swim lessons to provide the safest experience possible for your family.

What’s staying the same?

  • Skills will be taught progressively, allowing swimmers to learn to swim safely while developing confidence in the water.

  • During the first lesson, instructors will evaluate your swimmer and work to help develop swim skills using the YMCA’s swim stages. Click the image below to download the Swim Lesson Stage Selector.

What’s different?

    • Swim lessons will be offered as both small group and private lessons. Small group lessons are beginning soon at several YMCAs and will be expanded to more locations soon.
    • Each session will include one lesson per week for four weeks.
    • For swimmers under age 13 who have not yet completed the swim test, a parent or guardian age 16 or older will be in the water with the swimmer. This ensures appropriate distancing per state and CDC guidelines. The swim instructor will guide the parent and child through the skills being taught in the lesson.
    • Parent involvement in lessons also means that parents are learning how to instruct their child in critical water safety skills that can then be reinforced outside of lessons at the Y, a benefit not previously seen with group swim lessons or typical private swim lessons.
    • One adult family member/guardian will be allowed on the pool deck to watch the swim lesson if not needed in the water.
    • All equipment used during each swim lesson will be cleaned and disinfected between lessons.
