GEARING UP FOR THE BEST SUMMER EVER: SUMMER CAMP AT THE Y!
Tips For Parents On Picking The Right Camp
Spring break is in the rearview mirror, and after a week of kids lounging around the house, parents are searching for summer camps. The YMCA of South Hampton Roads is gearing up to offer a variety of camp experiences designed to create lasting memories for kids and teens. While summer may seem like a time for carefree fun, summer camp plays a critical role in preventing summer learning loss and improves a child's overall health.
“Attending summer camp provides children with a unique opportunity to engage in outdoor activities, fostering social skills and a sense of community. The camp provides a nurturing environment where children can belong, build relationships, develop character and uncover their potential,” says Regional Youth Development Operations Director Seth Foster.
As a leading nonprofit committed to nurturing youth potential, the Y has been a trailblazer in providing summer camp for over 139 years. The YMCA of South Hampton Roads continues this legacy by offering a safe, enriching experience led by caring staff who model positive values. There are several factors to consider to ensure your kids have a fun and enriching experience.
- Think about your child's interests. Look for a camp that aligns with their hobbies, whether it's sports, arts and crafts, outdoor adventures, or STEM activities.
- Location, location, location. Consider the camp's location and facilities. Is it conveniently located for you? Are the facilities safe, well-maintained, and suitable for your child's needs?
- The camp's staff and qualifications are important and often overlooked. Check if the staff members are trained in child safety, CPR and first aid. Does your child have special needs that require extra training or attention from the staff?
- Financial considerations are also important. Determine the camp's cost, including any additional fees for activities or equipment and see if there are any financial assistance options available.
Financial barriers shouldn't stand in the way of a child's opportunity to attend camp, which is why the Y offers financial assistance through its scholarship program. Vice President of Youth Development Jamie Childress says, “Summer is a time for exploration and growth, and we provide an opportunity for kids to make the most of it. Camp is a transformative experience for kids and we want to make sure that every kid that wants to go gets the opportunity through our scholarship program.” Donations to support sending kids to camp can be made at ymcashr.org/give.
