Carmen Matlock, Family Programs/Camp Director at Great Bridge/Hickory Family YMCA recently completed her Team Leader certification from the YMCA of the USA. We caught up with her to ask about her time at the Y.

How long have you worked for the YMCA of South Hampton Roads?
I have been with the YSHR for 1 year and 7 months.

What is your favorite part of your job?
My favorite part of my job is being able to make an impact on kids lives during camp and developing our young staff who start working for the Y.

Aside from Principles & Practices, which course(s) was your favorite and why?
I was suprised at how much I enjoyed Fiscal Management. I learned a lot and used a lot of the resources for budgeting. I also enjoyed Facilitation Skills, the skills I leared in that class helped with my confidence for my training to become a Listen First Instructor.

Tell us what you enjoyed about Principes & Practices?
Principles & Practices helped me do a lot of self-reflection about my leadership skills. I learned to be the leader my staff needs me to be. It also taught me that every Y has its challenges, but through teamwork and great leadership, these challenges are easy to overcome.

What did receiving your certification do for you personally?
This certificate is proof that hard work and perseverance goes a long way and is proof that the Y invests in their leaders.

Please join us in congratulating Carmen on this accomplishment!
