Amenity Guidelines

Reminders:

  • Do not enter any YMCA space if you have been exposed to COVID-19 in the past 14 days or are experiencing any symptoms of COVID-19.
  • In accordance with state guidelines, masks are required for all people ages 10+ who visit the Y. Masks may be removed while actively exercising or while in the pool. Masks are strongly recommended for ages 2–9. Masks should not be worn by children younger than 2.
Lobbies

Lobbies will open for member use, however there will only be one chair per table to promote social distancing. 


Bring your own water from home. Touchless water bottle filling stations will be available, but water fountains will be closed.


Check in with YMCA staff before proceeding to the lobby seating area. During the check-in process, we will check temperature and ask health screening questions.

Coffee stations will be closed.

Wellness Centers

Capacities at each YMCA will be limited to 75% in Virginia and 30% in North Carolina in accordance with state guidelines. You can see how busy your Y is by clicking here.

Cardiovascular, strength training and free-weight equipment will be marked as available or unavailable to promote social distancing and we'll rotate pieces daily to allow for additional cleaning between use.

  • Boxmaster equipment will not be available for use.
  • Activtrax kiosks will not be available for use. Please visit activtrax.com or download the Activtrax app to load your workout on your mobile device.

Practice social distancing and keep at least ten feet between you and others.


Wipe down equipment before and after use.


Please limit your workout to 45 minutes.

Fitness Classes

Class participation will be limited in accordance with state guidelines and reservations are required. Click here for schedules and to reserve your space.

Personal Training

YMCA certified personal trainers are available at open Virginia locations to help you reach your goals. When you purchase personal training, you'll work out with one-on-one guidance from your trainer.

Using your own equipment (for example: yoga mats, foam rollers and blocks) is encouraged.

Personal trainers and clients will be required to wear a mask during the training session.


Personal trainers and clients will stay at least ten feet apart from each other and from other members and staff.

Stay & Play and Interactive Zones
  • Capacity is limited per licensing guidelines and care is provided on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • Care is provided for up to two hours per day, and is available on a drop-in basis. View hours at your YMCA.
  • Care is provided for children in groups of 10. In some locations, space will allow for more than one group of children to be cared for at the same time.
  • Per state mandates, any child 10 years of age or older must wear a mask while at the Y and not actively engaged in exercise. Children ages 2–9 are encouraged to wear a mask in accordance with state guidelines.
  • Children ages 0–2 must not wear a mask. 
  • Depending on how many people are in your group, please plan for up to 15 minutes for screening and temperature check for each person entering the YMCA.

Stay & Play centers have reopened for most YMCAs in Virginia and will open soon in North Carolina, serving children ages 6 weeks–7 years.


Interactive Zones have reopened for some YMCAs in Virginia and will open soon in North Carolina, serving children ages 7 weeks–13 years.

Play Zones and indoor playground structures remain closed.

Pools

Pools are open for lap swimming, open swim and water exercise classes with capacity limits in place in accordance with state guidelines. Reservations are required.


You can reserve your spot up to 7 days in advance. (Example: a May 26 12pm lap lane appointment will open for reservation on May 19 at 12pm)


We recommend arriving up to 15 minutes before your reservation, to allow time for screening and temperature checks for each person using the pool. For guidance on check-in location and path to pool, visit the locations page and select your location.

Please limit your swim to one swim session per day.


Lap lanes will be limited to two swimmers per lane. If two swimmers are in a lane they will start/stop at opposite ends. 


Only swimmers with reservations will be allowed in the pool area. If swimming laps, children under the age of 13 must have a swim necklace indicating that they have passed the swim test. Parents may not remain on the pool deck, unless they also have a swim reservation.


Swim tests will be given at the start of each open swim session. When checking in, let YMCA staff know if you are interested in taking a swim test. All children under the age of 13 will be required to take/retake their swim test to be in the water beyond arm's reach of a parent/guardian.   


Please maintain at least ten feet of space between you and other swimmers at all times (outside your family).


Hot tubs, saunas, splash pads, spray pools and interactive play features, which also includes our slides and wading pools are closed in VA.  


U.S. Coast Guard approved life jackets for nonswimmers must be provided by the member.

Racquetball and Tennis Courts

Some racquetball and tennis courts will open with capacity limits in place. Reservations are required.


You can reserve your slot up to 7 days in advance. (Example: a June 26 12pm court reservation will open on June 19 at 12pm)

To use the Y, you must be an active member of the YMCA of South Hampton Roads. We will begin welcoming back nationwide members and guests on July 1.

Restrooms and Locker Rooms

Locker rooms  and showers have reopened in Virginia and will reopen September 12 in North Carolina.

Please wash your hands for at least 20 seconds with soap and water immediately after checking in and before leaving the Y.

Gymnasiums

Unless needed to allow for social distancing in child care/summer camp programs, gymnasiums will be open for shooting baskets.


Bring your own water from home. Touchless water bottle filling stations will be available, but water fountains will be closed.


Bring your own ball. Balls will not be available for loan.
