Kathy Higgins Completes YMCA Global Leader Certification
Kathy Higgins, Membership Director at the Hilltop Family YMCA recently completed her YMCA Global Leader Certification from the YMCA of the USA. We caught up with her to ask her a little bit about her time at the Y.
How long have you worked for the YMCA of South Hampton Roads?
I have worked with the YSHR on and off for 19 years, but in my most recent role as Membership Director for 3 years.
What is your favorite part of your job?
The best part of my job is acting as the "glue" within my center and keeping our team and our members tight knit. I love being the go-to person that makes everyone happy.
Why did you choose to pursue this certification?
I wanted to complete my Global Leader Certification because I felt that it was important for me to have the tools to let my community know that the Y accepts you no matter who you are. In addition, it helps me to properly educate my team and the community and show them that no matter where a person comes from or the lifestyle they live, there is beauty in everyone.
Before completing her certification, Kathy had to complete a project related to diversity, inclusion, or global engagement in her center or community. When asked to explain her project Kathy stated,
My project included being part of the first Regional Emerging Multicultural Leadership Experience committee for South Hampton Roads. With the support of great YSHR leaders, I was able to contribute in the planning of this successful event by making an Escape Room activity come to life and assisting in the planning of breakout sessions.
The Emerging Multicultural Leadership Experience (EMLE) is a multi-day learning experience designed to provide multicultural professional staff the opportunity to become further engaged and connected in the Y Movement.
Please join us in congratulating Kathy on this accomplishment!
