The great outdoors helps a teen reach deep inside.
Bobby's serious social awkwardness meant he had no friends and no idea how to be one, either. His mother was struggling too - especially financially. A Camp Silver Beach experience, made possible through a scholarship, introduced Bobby to a world he'd never imagined. Sensitive adult counselors who love kids and believe that caring, honesty, respect, responsibility and faith can transform young lives, took the boy under their wing. Bobby loved it all - the watersports, the skateboarding, the camaraderie of camp. It was the best summer of his life.
The YMCA is a place where everyone is welcome regardless of age, race, religion or financial circumstances. Each year, through the annual giving campaign, We Build People, your gifts provide the financial assistance to ensure that YMCA’s programs and services are available to children and families who need them the most.
Your gift will fund our Open Doors scholarship program, allowing a child to discover all the adventures that await them at camp. Click here to read testimonials from campers and scholarship recipients.

George Williams Society
"I believe that if earnest devoted self-denying people can be found to
unite themselves together, God will smile upon their efforts and much good
might be done" Sir George Williams, Founder of the Young Men's Christian
Association, June 1844, London, England.
Among the annual donors who support the YMCA through the We Build People campaign is a special, deeply dedicated group. These are the members of the George Williams Society. With an annual gift of $1,000 or more, you will have the opportunity to join with other George Williams Society members at a special event held in your honor. Your contribution will be acknowledged on a recognition board displayed at 14 YMCA of South Hampton Roads family centers and facilities, and in the annual report. You will also receive an invitation to the YMCA of South Hampton Roads annual meeting.
Most of all as a George Williams Society member, you’ll feel a quiet pride in the good you do. By joining the George Williams Society, you make a powerful lasting statement about the value of the YMCA in people’s lives and you inspire others to give more generously themselves. |
